How to Access ScienceDirect

 

ScienceDirect is a leading discovery platform of peer-reviewed literature from Elsevier journals and books, including thousands of open access articles.

 

Ways to access ScienceDirect:

Access ScienceDirect Remotely (Outside campus or at home)

  • Login using username and password. If you have a remote access account, you may access ScienceDirect by keying the username and password.
  • Access via OpenAthens. You can access ScienceDirect by logging in first to OpenAthens and select ScienceDirect under the resources. Please click here to login to OpenAthens or click here to know how to login in OpenAthens.
  • Access via the Link. You can login to ScienceDirect/Scopus by clicking the icon below and login using your UP email.

Note: If you don't have a ScienceDirect account, you will be prompted to register, otherwise, you will not be able to remotely access ScienceDirect. Click here to know on how to register.

  • IP Access: You can access ScienceDirect without logging in on the database, as long as you are connected to or using the UPV’s internet connection (e.g. within campus). To check if you are accessing ScienceDirect via IP access:
    • Connect your device to the UPV’s internet connection
    • Open ScienceDirect website, https://www.sciencedirect.com
    • Check the upper right corner if you can see this icon  sd_icon  or this note: “Brought to you by: University of the Philippines”

    • If it is present, then you can access directly ScienceDirect and need not to login

 

How to Check If You are Accessing ScienceDirect Remotely

For Web Browsers: Check the upper right corner of the screen, you will see this icon sd_icon or this note: “Brought to you by: University of the Philippines”

IMPORTANT NOTE:

You need to have a ScienceDirect account in order to access ScienceDirect remotely (i.e. outside campus or at home). Please see steps below:


 

  

Steps on How to Register for ScienceDirect

For those who do not have a personal account in ScienceDirect/Scopus, you may create an account using your UP EMAIL (@up.edu.ph) ONLY in order to activate the remote access. Creation of an account using a non-UP email will not activate your remote access. Please follow the steps below:

If you do not have a SD or Scopus account yet, please register first, otherwise, proceed to enabling remote access.

  1. Go to the ScienceDirect website www.sciencedirect.com
  2. Click Register at the upper right corner.

  3. Enter your account information. For the email, you are required use an email address that ends with one of the following:
    • up.edu.ph
    • upb.edu.ph
    • upcebu.edu.ph
    • upd.edu.ph
    • uplb.edu.ph
    • upm.edu.ph
    • upmin.edu.ph
    • upou.edu.ph
    • upv.edu.ph

  4. If you have already registered, you will be directed to the login page (you will be required to enter your password):

    Otherwise, you will be directed to the the Registration page:

  5. Once all details are supplied, click Register. If successful, you will see this page:

Once you have registered, you may proceed to enable remote access for your SD and Scopus account.

 

Enable Remote Access

  1. Go to the SD remote access page www.sciencedirect.com/science/activateaccess
  2. Enter the same UP Mail address you used for registration.

    Input Visayas, then select University of the Philippines Visayas.

  3. Click Acces through University of the Philippines Visayas


  4. Check your UP Mail inbox for a confirmation email with the subject ScienceDirect - Remote access request confirmation. Look into your Spam folder if you do not see the email.

After confirmation, whenever you visit/login to SD or Scopus you will now see a UP badge at the top of the screen (Brought to you by University of the Philippines). This indicates that you are using the UPV Library remote access. You can now login to ScienceDirect or Scopus from outside UP campus.
